Synopsis: Lee Bo Young plays the heir to a chaebol group (Oh Seong) who has her eye firmly on the goal of taking over the company. Frankly, I carried nary an ounce of suspense as I watched it. Admittedly, after reading the english translations and some summary spoilers on the net, I already knew the story beforehand. On the other hand, I watched most Jin Yong series after having read the novels and knowing the story extensively and most adaptations still managed to hook me on.
To be honest, Gu Long's writing style never really appealed to me and usually has me vomiting blood when reading the dialogue exchanges between his characters--they just seem to talk in circles and don't get to the point! Add Gu Long's sometimes preachy tone and "facts" of life, his writings gave me headaches at times. Becky Tai's english translations actually had me start to appreciate Gu Long and even like him. There must've been something regarding language, because in english, the dialogues seemed witty and quite humorous (a humor I never detected in chinese) and gave me the impression that I was reading some sci-fi/fantasy genre novel. Massively uneven costume comedy from the prolific and generally appreciated Joe Ma. His new hit registers as occasionally amusing fluff, and it features a fine star turn from Cecilia Cheung. However, the random shtick can be annoying and shrill, and the film ultimately suffers for it. Review by Kozo: Joe Ma continues his string of modest box-office hits with The Lion Roars, a welcome costume comedy which pairs eternally-tanned Louis Koo with beleagured celebrity Cecilia Cheung. Koo is Seasonal Chan, a meek poet who's picky about finding a new wife. He lucks out (?) when he meets Moth Liu (Cecilia Cheung), who's strong-willed and utterly charming. In a strange turn of events, the Emperor actually forces the two to marry, but they seem happy with the arrangement. After all, neither has had much success in finding a desirable other half, and they seem to hit it off immediately.

An amusing but dated comedy, this early star vehicle for Stephen Chow displays the undisciplined form that would make him HK’s greatest comic actor. Chow plays Wan-Sing, a two-bit thief who’s hired by Shing Fui-On to romance an heiress. Shing’s cousin Fei-Fei (Sandra Ng) is due to receive a massive inheritance when she marries and Shing wants to steal the fortune for himself. However, Fei-Fei turns out to be a fake. It seems evil cousin Anthony Wong wants the money for himself and enlists lowly garbage woman Feng (also Sandra Ng) to impersonate his cousin and take the money. Yes, all these multiple plot threads criss-cross to no end, leading to a wacky action ending out at sea. Even though the characters have evil motives, the actors themselves are likable and there’s enough agreeable shtick to make the film an enjoyable if not entirely crucial 90 minutes. Strange-looking pop star and director Anthony Chan has an extended cameo as a private dick who constantly bumps into Wan-Sing and aids him whenever necessary. Amusing late eighties fluff. It’s not art, but it doesn’t try to be.

Review by Kozo: This Lunar New Year film from Lee Lik-Chee is a typical Lunar New Year comedy with some funny bits amidst all the schmaltzy hijinks. As usual, there are three guys, three girls, and a patriarch who needs to have a problem solved. Ng Man-Tat is owner of the Lucky Cafe, who’s facing the possible liquidation of his beloved cafe by a bitchy businesswoman (Sandra Ng). Tat’s son Nam (Daniel Chan) is a reporter who befriends runaway heiress Fon-Fon (Shu Qi), and decides to use her for a hot story. Meanwhile, waiter Fook (Eric Kot) falls for Fanny (Kristy Yeung), a sweet secretary at a local kung-fu school. He’s inexperienced at dating so he turns to fellow waiter Sui (Stephen Chow), AKA: the “Prince of Egg Tarts.” He’s a renowned lothario who practices the “highest stance of courting girls,” i.e. he only wishes to court them, not succeed or fail. Sui's secret is that once upon a time he wronged his first love, Candy (Sammi Cheng), who’s now a nurse at a local hospital. Guess what happens.

Review by Kozo: The first twenty minutes of Stephen Chow’s latest film are befuddling in that they appear to head nowhere. The non-sensical belly laughs of his usual antics are gone. Instead we get a bare minimum plot and unfamiliar characters. Then it gets better. Chow is Wan Tin-Sau, a professional extra whose attention to his craft make him unbearable to work with. Twice he gets banned from the set of the latest action picture from action star Sister Cuckoo (Karen Mok). Enter Lau Piu-Piu (Cecilia Cheung Pak-Chi), a coarse club girl who approaches Sau for acting lessons to better her “professional” career. He helps her, but not without some difficulty, and they begin a small romance. However certain truths conspire to keep them apart and Sau finds himself alone - until he gets a call from Sister Cuckoo, who wants him for her next movie.

In 1990, action choreographer-turned-director Blackie Ko added two more names to that list with the comic duo of Curry and Pepper, the lead detectives in the Hong Kong movie of the same name. Already well-established "Sky King" Jacky Cheung and a pre-superstardom Stephen Chow headline this amusing action-comedy, starring as two mismatched partners who take the familiar concept of "male bonding" to a whole new level. While by no means a comedy classic in the same league as Chow's later works, Curry and Pepper boasts some engaging performances from Cheung and Chow, not to mention some surprisingly effective action sequences, which significantly enlivens the film's otherwise clichéd, fairly predictable storyline.

This isn't the best example of Chow's comedic charm, but it's a solid HK Cinema experience that's worth a look. Be sure to check out the "sleeping kung-fu". Review by Kozo: Gordon Chan directed this entertaining kung-fu comedy that features heavy production values in place of the customary Stephen Chow shenanigans. Chow is the legendary Beggar So, who starts off as a spoiled would-be scholar. He may be a fine martial artist but his lackadaisical, superior attitude and shameful illiteracy make him a prime target for various nefarious evil-doers. Thanks to their efforts, as well as his own spoiled laziness, So receives a fitting fall from grace. He and his father (Ng Man-Tat) are sentenced to be beggars, and So sinks into self-pity. Meanwhile, evil court magician Norman Tsui Siu-Keung plans a coup, and a resistance effort (led by Chow's usual leading lady Cheung Man) plots against him. They want So to be involved, but his pride won't allow it. It isn't until he learns the nifty "sleeping kung-fu" that he regains this self-confidence and can ascend to his rightful place as leader of the Beggar Clan. And there's comedy, too. For fans of Stephen Chow's usual mo lei tau, King of Beggars may seem puzzling. The brief asides for wacky comedy seem almost extraneous, as director Gordan Chan is much more concerned with the kung-fu clichés that typify these sorts of costume pictures. The film moves a bit slower than the usual Stephen Chow escapades, and actually begins to resemble a western film in its three-act storyline and tried-but-true plot devices. The result may seem almost obligatory, but the film still manages to be quite entertaining and enjoyable, though in a more mundane way than you would expect from Stephen Chow. Western audiences would likely cotton to this Stephen Chow film, as it's extremely accesible and devoid of the esoteric otherness that typifies his usual work (i.e. All for the Winner and the Royal Tramp films). Those who want a gradual introduction to HK's king of comedy would do well to start with this film. King of Beggars was also well loved in Hong Kong, earning HK Film Awards nominations for Best Picture, Director, Screenplay and Music. (Kozo 1995/1997)
